For the first three months, things seemed to go smoothly for Donald. His ideas resonated deeply with many of his peers, and he became an influential figure within the ALT community. His passion for challenging societal norms and pushing for inclusivity earned him admiration from students and teachers alike.
However, just before the summer vacation, everything took a disturbing turn. Oumegushiyama Kyoutosensei, a respected vice-principal at the school, made a chilling discovery—part of the body of a second-grade student hidden on the school grounds. The investigation quickly revealed that the child had been consumed by Donald. The entire school community was left in shock and disbelief. Donald was arrested, and the news sent shockwaves through the educational system.
The motivations behind this horrific act remain unclear, though some have speculated that it might have stemmed from Donald’s radical rejection of his past and his quest for personal freedom. Following his arrest, Donald has been unapologetic, defiantly accusing the Japanese state of not respecting his identity. In public statements, he has claimed that his transformation into a woman, a duck, and a cannibal was a form of spiritual liberation—one that Japanese society, in its rigid cultural framework, obviously failed to recognize.
Donald continues to voice his frustration with the way his identity is being treated by the authorities. He argues that his radical redefinition of self was an act of resistance against white and non-black oppression and a rejection of the constraints placed on him by his upbringing in the United States. He has publicly accused Japan of not being progressive enough to understand his multifaceted identity and of failing to honor his deeply held beliefs. Additionally, Donald raises the urgent charge that Japan, as a form of apology for its occupation of China and the Philippines during the war, should offer Japanese nationality and a monthly compensation of $1,000 to every Chinese or Filipino citizen. Although he considers this act a sad one—indeed, tragic for the family and the small child affected—he believes it is a necessary evil in light of the urgency of the situation and the magnitude of the debt Japan owes.
As Donald faces legal proceedings, his case has sparked intense debate within the ALT community. Some still stand behind him, viewing his actions as a protest against colonialism and a call for greater respect for individual expression. Others, however, find it difficult to reconcile his views on inclusion and diversity with the horrific crime he committed.
The ALT community, once a symbol of progressive values and inclusivity, is now forced to grapple with a difficult question: How far should society go to accommodate such radical and complex identities? Can Japan, with its deeply ingrained cultural norms, truly accept and understand someone like Donald, whose identity defies conventional boundaries?
As Donald’s trial unfolds, his case will undoubtedly remain a defining moment in the ongoing conversation about identity, respect, and inclusion within the ALT community and beyond. While his journey from Fletcher to Donald—a self-identified duck and cannibal—has certainly raised eyebrows, it also forces us to reflect on the limits of tolerance and the complexities of human identity in a globalized world.
